essex growth agency
Bringing clarity and simplicity to the businesses and residents of Essex.

Let’s grow for it
The problem? Complexity and fragmentation.
With no single point of entry, finding the right support felt like guesswork. Time-poor businesses were being put off by bureaucracy and traditional, "government-heavy" communications.
The Essex Growth Agency (EGA) needed to change that.Their goal was clear: become the definitive, single front door for all of Essex’s business support, bringing visibility, clarity, and accessibility to everything the county has to offer.

Rich, insightful, energising... unafraid. Polar really brought the right challenge to our organisation. What the brand has allowed us to do is have that pro-growth voice out in the world to drive transformational change. I don't think we could have found a better partner than Polar to deliver on this project.

Simplifying the complex
To build a brand that actually hits the mark, we had to dig deeper. Through comprehensive workshops and stakeholder interviews, we dug into what was working, what wasn't, and what businesses truly need to thrive. The feedback exposed a clear paradox: while complex, 'government-heavy' bureaucracy was actively blocking growth, the region itself was bursting with advantages. The conversations highlighted a highly resilient SME economy, global infrastructure via major ports and airports, and an industrious workforce with an unstoppable 'can-do' attitude. By uncovering these truths early doors, we knew the strategy couldn't just be about simplifying the support system, it had to be about aggressively championing the county's competitive edge.

Everything your business needs
to do the business
To build trust, the brand needed to feel completely different from a slow, bureaucratic local authority. It needed to feel energetic, approachable, and human. We anchored everything around one unified idea: Everything your business needs to do the business.

A Brand with Impact
We built a visual identity that balances an approachable feel with absolute authority, using custom letterforms and subtle flourishes to reflect the tailored nature of EGA’s services. The brand mark was designed for maximum flexibility, working seamlessly in both full-text and abbreviated "EGA" formats across all digital and physical applications.
To visually represent "clearing the path and connecting the dots" for businesses, we introduced dynamic journey lines that add movement, energy, and a human touch to layouts. The final brand expression is bold yet simple, built to be toned down or dialled up depending on the audience, with expressive moments brought to life through real, human-focused photography and an approachable, welcoming colour palette.

Jargon-free.
Unmistakably Essex
If it sounds like a council, it’s not working.
We crafted a tone of voice that speaks like a partner, not a bureaucracy, ensuring communications remain clear, simple, and jargon-free. A mature voice rooted in the genuine warmth of the local business community, but injected with a flash of that signature Essex wit. Grounded yet unbeatably optimistic.

Three audiences.
One seamless experience
The website is the digital home of EGA's "single front door" promise. Designed to serve three distinct groups — local businesses, incoming talent, and international investors, the platform uses intuitive navigation to route users to exactly what they need in as few clicks as possible. Confident, accessible, and highly functional, it strips away the friction of seeking business support.

Looking Ahead
Beyond the fresh look, the real shift happened internally. By challenging institutional biases, the brand earned business support a seat at the top table. It completely flipped how leadership views the sector, shifting internal culture and turning EGA into an ambitious, high-energy engine for growth.
